Q&A with Rocco Salvetti

What is your current favourite game on mobile?

Fran Bow has my attention at the moment. It’s available on a number of platforms including iOS and Android.

How did you get started making indie games and how long have you been at it?

I started when when I was a kid, pausing here and there, especially when I started University and then again when I moved to London. Jonathan Blow‘s ethos inspired me.

What are you currently working on?

I’m working on London Decadence. It’s a much larger project than those before it, so it might be a while before it’s released.

Can you tell us more about Clockwork Clara and Sara And Death?

Clockwork Clara is an experimental puzzle game with one level per type of player. The inspiration came to me when I was doing some research for Sara And Death and wanted to experiment on different types of problem solvers. Clockwork Clara took me around two months to develop and release.

Sara And Death is a philosophical puzzle game and my inspiration for that came from Ingmar Bergman, a love I had years ago, and my disdain for Candy Crush. Sara And Death took me around a year to develop, and then time afterwards to market the game. This doesn’t stop.

What do you think are the biggest challenges today facing the mobile gaming sector?

Leaving behind addiction as a parameter for quality, and challenging us like if we are not forever 12 years old. Brainless fun is overdone, and so are shiny cute unicorns.

If you had the opportunity to rewind the clock and/or change the past to be involved in one mobile game already released, what game would it be?

Ideally? I would stop all of those FarmVille, Candy Crush, addiction business models.

What was your favourite game growing up?

I can’t name only one, but I will keep the list short. The original Deus Ex, Loom, Theme Park, and Baldurs Gate 2.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

In my opinion, Fran Bow is one of the highest poetical achievements in the video game business. A game that can make you more cultured and empathetic, that can remind you that you are human and capable of complex feelings. If you haven’t already, check it out!
