Search For A Star Over 40 judges from the games industry have come together to assess games and artwork created by students across the UK & Europe, all of whom are hoping to walk away with job opportunities with leading games development studios.

After two industry-set challenges, assessors have now filtered the 814 entrants down to 10 programming students and 21 art students across a range of disciplines. These high achieving students will now move on to the final interview stage to speak directly with leading UK studios.

The initiative, developed by Grads In Games, aims to highlight talented students to leading studios and improve the links between academia and the games industry. Over 30 UK studios are involved in Search For A Star in 2017, either as judges, sponsors or prize givers, including Sumo Digital, Playground Games, nDreams, NaturalMotion, Epic Games, Edge Case Games and many more.

In the second round over 50 games were developed, which can be downloaded and played for free on our website, alongside 60 pieces of art across four specialisation areas.

Code, art, and animation / VFX winners will be announced during individual finals days for programming students on 10th April at Staffordshire University, and on 13th April at University of Hertfordshire for art students.

During the finals day, finalists will take part in an interview designed to mimic the standards of the games industry. Students will sit with a panel of five industry professionals and studio heads, who will assess the students and provide feedback based on their performance.

In addition to the grand prize of the chance to get a job with our partner studios, prize packs for winners donated by the industry include a fully funded Masters scholarship from GamerCamp & Playstation First, training courses from Academy Class, art software suites from Allegorithmic, countless games from our partners, apparel, signed books, and much more.

People are looking for a little bit of passion, and extracurricular stuff outside of university helps a lot with this. Entering competitions, creating and publishing your own games – these are all ways of making yourself stand out from the crowd. This is really what we’re trying to offer with the competition.”
